Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray (left) and Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino (right) join students to inspect the new speed awareness sign in front of St. Christopher’s School at the intersection of Merrick Road and Gayle Avenue in Baldwin. The Town installed the radar-controlled sped awareness sign to help protect pedestrians, who walk to and from St. Christopher’s School. Of particular concern are the young people attending the school. The sign was funded through a Nassau County Grant.

Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino (3rd right)
presents a certificate of recognition to Mrs. Terry Archer (5th right) of Baldwin, surviving spouse of Joseph Archer, for her husband’s heroic efforts during the sinking of the U.S.A.T. Dorchester in World War II. The event took place during the “Four Chaplains - Back to God Night” at the American Legion, Post # 246 in Baldwin. “The Four Chaplains” were Lt. George L. Fox, Methodist; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish: Lt. John P. Washington, Roman Catholic; Lt. Clark V. Poling, Dutch Reformed, who chose to go down with their ship on February 2, 1943, after it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. In addition to tending to the wounded and calming the frightened, they gave up their life jackets and, in the case of Rabbi Goode, his gloves.

Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino thanks fourth grade students in teacher Kara Spinelli’s class for their participation in the Valentines for Veterans program at the Wilson Elementary School in Rockville Centre. Through this program, which the Town instituted in 2001, students create valentines to send to veterans at local VA hospitals. Many of these men and women don’t have families and it means so much to them to know that the young children appreciate them for the sacrifices they made for our nation.

Town of Hempstead Sanitary District Number 2 in Baldwin (serving Baldwin, South Hempstead and Roosevelt) and the South Hempstead Civic Association sponsored “The Big Sweep," an annual event where residents pitch in to do spring cleaning on and adjacent to Grand Avenue, along the Baldwin Memorial Day Parade route. Town of Hempstead Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino put on his gloves and grabbed a broom to help out. Councilman Santino also thanked all the members of Sanitary District No. 2 as well as the volunteer participants, Key Club, and Boy Scouts from Troop 182.

Councilman Anthony J. Santino was recently presented with the "Elected Official of Distinction" Award by the Nassau County Independence Party at their annual Victory Celebration & Awards Dinner. Presenting the award are Independence Party Chairman Bobby Kumar and Vice Chairman Steve Cohn.

Volunteers shave their heads in solidarity with children fighting cancer, while family and friends give generously - throughout the community and worldwide. The St. Baldrick Foundation uses the donations to fund more childhood cancer research grants than any organization, except the United States government.
