Town of Hempstead Senior Councilman’s idea sponsored by Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, unanimously passed Senate, signed into law by the President

Town of Hempstead Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino proudly announced that the President of the United States signed H.R. 2079, a bill that renames the East Rockaway Post Office in honor of the late John J. Cook, into law on May 15, 2012.

Santino, who grew up in East Rockaway and later served as a village trustee and deputy mayor, was touched by Mr. Cook’s personal story of service and sacrifice after a conversation last year with Cook’s widow, Roberta, who still lives in the East Rockaway community.

At Councilman Santino’s request, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy sponsored a bill to officially rename the post office the “John J. Cook United States Post Office.” McCarthy introduced the legislation in the House of Representatives on June 1, 2011.

After passing the House of Representatives and then unanimously clearing the United States Senate last week, the President signed the bill into law earlier this week. The name change takes effect immediately.

“John J. Cook was a true American hero who served the East Rockaway community for more than six decades, making him one of the longest-serving postal employees in the nation’s history. Renaming this post office in his honor is a fitting tribute to his selfless service and personal sacrifice for close to seven decades,” said Santino.

“I want to thank Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy for shepherding this measure through the House of Representatives,” Santino continued. “It will keep alive the memory of a man who served the people of East Rockaway with such extraordinary dedication.”

Cook enlisted in the Navy during World War II and survived a 1945 attack in Japan where 724 men were killed and 255 were wounded. Starting his position at the post office at age 17 – breaking for the war, and continuing his USPS service after his tour of duty – Cook maintained his route in East Rockaway at the post office from 1949 through 2005. John J. Cook trekked through rain, snow, sleet and hail on his daily 8-mile route to ensure the daily mail was always delivered on time, racking up 150,000 miles over the years.

“A World War II veteran, Cook was a member of the greatest generation who married his beloved Roberta and built a life together after the war here in East Rockaway. Walking the same 8 mile route for 60 years and four months, John often worked late hours, holidays or came in early to ensure his job got done and the families and seniors of our community got their mail,” Santino added.

John continually touched the lives of the countless people he served spanning many generations. He knew all of his customers very well and gave personalized service throughout his entire career. John J. Cook passed away in 2005 at the age of 78.

An official renaming ceremony will be held later in the year and organized by the United States Postal Service.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino announced the summer schedule for the Town’s Child Car Seat Safety Inspection Program.

The town’s certified child passenger safety technicians will inspect and properly install child car safety seats and instruct guardians on their proper installation. New York State law requires that children under the age of 8 are restrained in an appropriate child restraint system when riding in a motor vehicle.

“Hempstead Town’s certified child passenger safety technicians will check to be sure that your car and booster seats are properly positioned and correctly installed in your vehicle in order to provide the best protection for your young passengers,” stated Supervisor Kate Murray.

“I urge all parents and guardians to take advantage of this free and important life-saving program. A properly installed car safety seat can keep a child safe in the event of a crash,” added Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino.

During the months of June, July, August and September the Child Car Seat Inspection Team will be visiting various communities throughout the township twice each week. Town technicians have received rigorous training and are certified by Safe Kids Worldwide, a coalition of 450 health and safety experts, educators, foundations, governments and volunteers.

Inspections take place by appointment only between the hours of 9 am. and 2 pm. Guardians are asked to provide information in advance about the child’s age, weight, height and current car seat. Technicians can provide recommendations for appropriate car seats, as well as information about recalls and possible defects. Space at each inspection event is limited and appointments are made on a first-come, first-served basis.

The service is provided free of charge.

To view the summer inspection schedule, please visit the town’s website, www.TOH.LI and follow the “Citizen Services” link to “Public Safety.”

Appointments may be scheduled by calling the Town of Hempstead Department of Public Safety at (516) 538-1900, extension 217.

Town of Hempstesd Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino was joined by Supervisor Kate Murray and Senator Dean Skelos in Oceanside along Long Beach Road for a visual inspection of streetscape progress.

New concrete walkways, brick paving stonres, decorative Victorian lighting and trash receptacles are being installed on the west side of Long Beach Road between Tilrose Avenue and Poole Street.

“Beautifying our downtowns is a welcome addition to our commercial areas for residents, business owners and shoppers,” Santino said. “This busy thoroughfare in Oceanside will certainly benefit from these enhancements.”

A large portion of the $380,000 Oceanside streetscape project was funded through money secured by New York State Senator Dean Skelos, as well as federal funds.

Santino and Murray have an impressive record of initiating community enhancement projects throughout Oceanside. Most recently, the town completed a similar project on the east side of Long Beach Road, in front of Mio Posto restaurant.

Additional town efforts focused on upgrading Oceanside’s downtown have included streetscape enhancements on Davison Avenue, large sections of the east and west sides of Long Beach Road and portions of Lawson Boulevard, as well as the refurbishment of commuter parking lots near the Oceanside train station. What’s more, the town was the force behind ridding Oceanside of the reviled Oceanside Motel, replacing it with a much-needed commuter parking area. Finally, Murray and Santino attracted “Wild by Nature” and other businesses to this bustling business district.

Supervisor Kate Murray, Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino and other members of the Hempstead Town Board honored nine women who live or work in the Town of Hempstead for their outstanding contributions to the community at the town’s annual Pathfinder Awards ceremony Tuesday.

An inspiring keynote speech was delivered by Long Island’s own Christine Conniff Sheahan, founder, publisher and CEO of Networking Magazine, a national award-winning publication for enterprising executives. Ms. Sheahan began her career as an illustrator and started her own publishing corporation in 1981 and launched Networking Magazine in 1991.

“The women we recognize today have made a genuine difference in our communities and have gone to great lengths to accomplish their goals,” noted Murray. “From swimming with sharks in an effort to raise money for students to personally constructing homes for the elderly and needy, our ladies have shown grit, courage determination, intelligence and ‘grace under fire’ as they’ve staked their claims on success.”

The winners of this prestigious award are as follows:

Arts & Entertainment: Mary Ann Cali of North Valley Stream’s life-long love of music and instruments began 4th grade as she took up the violin and almost immediately demonstrated unique talent and unbridled passion, earning many music awards. Mary Ann began a teaching career in Garden City and she was soon chosen as the Orchestra Director for the Valley Stream School District. Having compiled a remarkable 33-year career in Valley Stream, Mary Ann is renowned as a respected and much loved educator. She provides instruction on the violin, viola, cello and string bass and she is the orchestra director at both the James A. Dever and Howell Road Schools. Mary Ann serves on district, county and state committees to promote music and support musical education. Mary Ann’s career and talent have been cited on many occasions, including District 13’s PTA Lifetime Member Award. Uncommon talent and supreme dedication have earned Mary chairs in the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra, Valley Stream Community Orchestra and the Lawrence Philharmonic.

Business: When it comes to home health care, Taniella Jo Harrison of Garden City means business. As the CEO of Tri-County Home Nursing Services, Taniella has increased revenue by 500 percent and quadrupled the size of her company’s work force. Taniella is committed to the principles of serious yet sensitive health care. Superior services and quality care have moved Tri-County Home Nursing Services to the head of the class in the health care industry. The company is renowned for hiring caregivers who are among the best trained and most highly educated in the field. Inspired to do justice to the work of the company’s founder, her grandmother Ella Ferguson, and her predecessor as CEO, her mom, Linda Cunegin, Taniella is continuing a tradition of “Family Caring for Family.” Despite a rigorous professional schedule, Taniella is devoted to many charitable concerns. She works tirelessly to raise scholarship funds for needy high school and college students and she even finds time to teach classes on digital scrapbooking. Tania continues to impact the Long Island Chapter of the NYS Association of Health Care Providers and the Coalition of 100 Black Women.

Community Affairs: East Meadow’s Camille Leone is involved in the Wounded Warriors Foundation, the East Meadow Kiwanis Club and the Parkway Elementary School PTA. Camille is a fighter for the Wounded Warriors Foundation, providing companion dogs to wounded servicemen and women and fundraising for the organization’s Pennies for Pups Walk. As a member of the East Meadow Kiwanis Club, Camille helps make the holidays brighter for families in need, providing food baskets for local families for Thanksgiving, Christmas/Hanukah and Easter/Passover. She also adopts two families a year, providing clothing and toys for the children. In addition, she supports the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center at North Shore LIJ Hospital and her family actively participates in fundraisers for the center. A role model to local children as a PTA member, Camille has instilled the desire to help others in her two elementary school-aged children, who have also become involved in community service under their mother’s guiding hand. She recently learned of a toddler battling Leukemia, and has been a driving force in fundraising for the family to help pay medical bills and provide basic necessities. She is also a regular supporter of the Rich Forenza Memorial Fund, which supports a burn unit for children, and she is working toward sending burn victims from the unit to camp this summer.

Education: Not many educators can say they literally swam with sharks for their students, but Leeann Graziose did just that. A parent at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Regional School in Bellmore pledged a large donation to the school if Principal Graziose would jump in the shark tank at the Long Island Aquarium. Leeann quickly donned a wet suit, taking on the challenge. In another instance, she ran a marathon to raise money to purchase new chairs for the school auditorium. Whether swimming with sharks to raise money or flying across a stage hoisted by a pulley for a school play or dressing up with her fellow faculty members for the school Halloween parade, there is nothing that Principal Leeann Graziose won’t do for her students. And while we can laugh about some of the adventures in which she has participated, Principal Graziose was just as quick to jump in to help one of her students who battled Cancer throughout his time at the school. She visited him at home and was a shoulder to cry on for his mother when needed. This unwavering compassion is typical for Leeann, who has taught the students at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Regional School sensitivity and kindheartedness in addition to the “three Rs”.

Health Services: This year marks Freeport’s Carolyn Simpkins’ 47th year in the nursing profession. After graduating as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1964, Carolyn launched a noteworthy journey as both nursing student and instructor. In 1990, Carolyn launched her first entrepreneurial endeavor, creating a Childbirth Education Center while simultaneously volunteering as a Childbirth Education Instructor at the Freeport Health Center. In 1996, Carolyn earned regional acclaim as the very first African American Family Nurse Practitioner to graduate from Adelphi University’s Post Graduate Nurse Practitioner Program. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, Carolyn provides primary health care including physical examinations, medical diagnoses, treatment and prescribing medications. Despite a busy and hectic professional schedule, Carolyn remains a pillar of the local community. She contributes nobly to the Boys and Girls Club of Hempstead, local senior groups, and area Breast Cancer Forums. Carolyn is also a dynamic contributor to the Antioch Baptist Church. She has been married to husband, Joshua for 53 years and the couple boasts, three children, seven grandchildren and two great grand children.

High School Senior: One could say that Kayla Babbush of Merrick is the “heartbeat” of John F. Kennedy High School’s student body. As the founder and “lifeforce” behind a group of young people who secured defibrillators for local schools, Kayla has demonstrated a kind heart and a lifesaving talent for helping others. Through her organization, “Teens for Life,” more than a thousand of her fellow students and faculty members now know CPR and how to operate an automated external defibrillator. In partnership with the Robbie Levine Foundation, Kayla advocates for the education and the tools to provide for emergency life-saving care for heart disease victims. Her efforts have been featured in Newsday and recognized by the American Heart Association. “Teens for Life” has even been advertised on milk cartons across the region. Kayla’s drive and commitment for Teens of Life also is complemented by her excellence in the classroom and dedication to extracurricular activities. Kayla posts a grade point average that exceeds 100 and she excels in several Advanced Placement courses. She is active in many school organizations and holds leadership positions, from the varsity kickline to the Key Club.

Humanitarian: Nancy Howard works tirelessly as both a member of her community and as a public servant. Nancy’s dedication to the Rockville Centre community made the spotlight when she stepped into the role as the village’s deputy mayor. Nancy’s talent as a strong leader shined brightly when Hurricane Irene made its way through our area last summer. She worked alongside Mayor Francis X. Murray to prepare the village for its emergency response during the storm. Nancy’s energy and compassion throughout the stressful period were integral in executing the storm management process and the post-storm response. Nancy also spearheaded the Mayor’s Youth Task Force, a group comprising volunteer teenagers who clean up Rockville Centre’s downtown business district on Saturday mornings. She was also instrumental in crafting an agreement between the village and Molloy College to upgrade village athletic fields. During that process, Nancy visited all of the youth sports organizations to present the proposals and answer questions from the community to ensure the best decision was made for the children and community. Nancy’s community involvement dates back to her extensive background as a dedicated parent volunteer in the Rockville Centre School District. Additionally, she has held leadership roles in the Rockville Centre Education Foundation, the Rockville Centre Guild for the Arts and the Mercy League.

Volunteer: Retiring after 37 years as a physical education teacher in the East Rockaway School District, Dorothy Criscuolo, of Rockville Centre has established herself as one of Hempstead Town’s most dedicated volunteers. For Dorothy, volunteerism began in 1994, when she started dedicating one night a week to South Nassau Communities Hospital as a messenger – running errands, making beds, escorting patients and socializing. Dorothy soon realized that one night a week wasn’t enough for her. Dorothy soon joined Rebuilding Together Long Island, Inc., an organization that rehabilitates homes for the needy, elderly and disabled. As a physical education teacher, Dorothy had the strength, endurance and, of course, her volunteer spirit, to help repair over 30 structures, including women’s shelters and historic buildings. From helping out a hospital one night a week to spending the next 14 years volunteering whenever possible, Dorothy has repeatedly shown her commitment to her fellow neighbors and to worthy causes in Hempstead Town.

Town of Hempstead Employee: For 29 years, Town of Hempstead employee Sheila Dauscher has enjoyed coming to work each day. Her colleagues in the town Highway Department, as well as those residents she assists, are greeted regularly with a friendly smile. She handles a range of important responsibilities, including the Records Access Office and Workers Compensation Case Management. Sheila also serves as the Litigation Liaison with the Town Attorney and as Office Operations Manager. If there’s a complex question that comes before the Highway Department, chances are that Sheila has an answer. She regularly goes above and beyond what is required and is always the first to volunteer for a project, to train and mentor new employees and promote teamwork among her colleagues. When it’s someone’s birthday or another event worthy of celebration, Sheila is always the one planning the party. Even after coming home to Malverne, Sheila remains involved in helping others. In the CYO Sports Program of the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes, she has been a soccer and track coach for nearly 10 years. She also donates blood platelets monthly to the New York Blood Center.

“Each of these women is truly extraordinary,” concluded Murray. “They refuse to limit themselves or accept the limits that others might place on them. Instead, these ladies have dared to realize achievements that have broadened horizons and created opportunities for future generations of Pathfinders.”

The U.S. House of Representatives passed Rep. Carolyn McCarthy’s (D-NY4) bill to rename the East Rockaway, New York Post Office after a letter carrier and local resident who worked there for over 60 years. The H.R. 2079 bill will officially name the post office in East Rockaway the “John J. Cook Post Office.”

“John Cook served the East Rockaway community as a letter carrier for multiple generations of families,” McCarthy said. “For over 60 years, Mr. Cook proved to be a model federal employee by displaying professionalism, courtesy, and tireless dedication. He was truly a remarkable individual and this will be a fitting tribute to an extraordinary man. I’m proud to have helped in this effort to honor the memory of this outstanding American citizen.”

“John loved his job,” said Cook’s widow, Roberta. “He would be so happy to see the place where he dedicated so much of his life named after him. I’m so proud of him and am grateful to Congresswoman McCarthy and everyone else who are working to make this happen. This honor is truly overwhelming and and well deserved, although I’m sure John wouldn’t see it that way, he was so modest.”

“It’s truly fitting that the United States honors the late John Cook for his tireless devotion to East Rockaway for the greater part of a century,” said Town of Hempstead Councilman Anthony J. Santino, who brought the story of Cook to McCarthy’s attention. “As one of our nation’s longest serving letter carriers, John left a great legacy. His widow, Roberta, as well as all his family, friends and East Rockaway neighbors should be proud of his lengthy and distinguished service to our community. I’m so glad that John’s memory and smiling face will be honored in perpetuity at 10 Main Street — the soon-to-be renamed John J. Cook United States Post Office.”

After serving in World War II in the Pacific theater, Cook began working for the local post office and quickly became an integral part of the East Rockaway community. Day in and day out for the next 60 years, he took pride in his work delivering the mail to his friends and neighbors in East Rockaway. He consistently went above and beyond his expected duties by doing things like inquiring about his customers’ health whenever he knew someone on his route had been sick. At times, he even canceled family vacations because the post office needed him for a last-minute shift. His commitment and service to East Rockaway have made him a well-loved and greatly admired member of the community.

Having passed the full House of Representatives, the legislation now moves to the Senate for a vote before it can be signed into law by the President.

Supervisor Kate Murray announced that Hempstead Town has once again earned the Excellence in Financial Reporting Award, the highest municipal budgeting honor, given by a renowned group of independent accounting professionals. It is the eighth consecutive year that Hempstead Town, led by the Murray administration, has received the honor awarded annually by the independent , non-partisan Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). The Excellence in Financial Reporting Award is the highest distinction in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

“I am very pleased that the town was once again recognized by the independent accounting professionals of the GFOA,” Murray said.

Town of Hempstead Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino added that “[t]his award is a testament to our dedication to the highest standards of accountability, transparency and forthrightness in fiscal reporting.”

The GFOA issued the award upon receiving Hempstead Town’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the 2010 fiscal year. According to GFOA, the CAFR was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes transparency, accountability and honesty in financial reporting.

“Being honored by the GFOA for the eighth consecutive year is quite an achievement,” said Hempstead Town Comptroller Kevin Conroy. “The award is a tribute to both the leadership and work ethic of Supervisor Kate Murray.”

The award comes on the heels of Murray’s tax-freeze budget for 2012, which, in addition to holding the line on all town taxes, maintains all town programs and services. As other governments are axing vital programs and jobs, Hempstead Town continues to offer the same array of quality services for residents. Additionally, Murray’s administration is stimulating the economy through development projects and is enhancing the local infrastructure through its ongoing capital improvement program.

Wall Street’s top credit rating agencies continually recognize Hempstead Town’s fiscal prowess, assigning the township with the highest credit ratings available. Controlling costs and steering clear of fiscal gimmicks, such as overreliance on “one-shot” (non-recurring) revenues are two of the many practices that assist the town in reaching its budgetary goals.

“While other governments are slashing vital programs, the Town of Hempstead is maintaining its array of life-enhancing services for residents while holding the line on taxes,” Murray said. “Gaining continued respect from the top Wall Street credit rating agencies enables us to continue providing those integral services for our residents.”

Supervisor Kate Murray, Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino, and Town Clerk Mark Bonilla have announced that Hempstead Town will participate in “Passport Day in the USA,” providing passport application services to U.S. citizens on a convenient weekend date.

This special passport event will be held at Hempstead Town Hall on Saturday, March 10, from 9 AM until 3 PM.

“We encourage you to take advantage of our popular one-stop passport processing services at Passport Day in the USA,” Murray said. “This special day at Town Hall is convenient for residents who may not be able to apply for a passport during the work week.”

”The Town of Hempstead is happy to provide this convenience service to all of its working families and seniors. Our Town Clerk, Mark Bonilla, and his staff will process all paperwork and even take the required photos for residents. Many past applicants have also been extremely happy at the speed they receive their passports or renewals when they apply through the Town Clerk’s office,” said Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino.

Any American citizen who plans to travel internationally is required to have a valid passport when entering or re-entering the United States by air. American citizens entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports of entry must present a passport book, passport card, or other travel documents approved by the U.S. government.

A relatively new, convenient and cost effective alternative to the book style passport is the passport card. The card, which became available in 2008, can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land and sea border crossings. The card CANNOT be used for international travel by air. The card, however, is less costly and more convenient to carry than a traditional passport.

“For those traveling this summer, the time to apply is now,” Bonilla said. “It normally takes four to six weeks for passports to process. Avoid unnecessary stress by applying at our Passport Day in the USA.”

Since establishing the One-Stop Passport Shop, town officials have continued to make the process of obtaining a passport easy and convenient for would-be travelers. Now the nation’s largest passport acceptance facility, the Passport Shop at Hempstead Town Hall is open weekdays, from 8 AM to 4:45 PM. Appointments are not required. The town can even take the passport photos. The Town Clerk’s “Speedy Pass” brings a mobile passport facility to organizations, teams and clubs who plan to travel abroad, making it easier for groups of travelers to obtain necessary travel documents.

For passport requirements and fees, please visit www.toh.li/passport-services or call the town’s One-Stop Passport Shop at (516) 812-3100 during regular business hours.

“Come to Town Hall to apply for your passport book or passport card,” Councilman Santino concluded. “It is an easy, convenient way to obtain your required travel documents.”

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino recognized the accomplishments of 11 students from the town at the February 7th board meeting. The students are semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search.

“We have such an extraordinary amount of talent in the Town of Hempstead and these students exemplify the best and brightest,” said Murray. “The high level of research they did is extraordinary.”

Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino congratulated Hewlett High School student Patricia Donskoy and Oceanside High School students Anoj Llanges and David Sheynberg on their stellar academic achievement. “There’s no question that these Intel Science semifinalists are an inspiration to their fellow students and represent a bright future for our community and Country,” said Santino.

The Intel Science Talent Search (STS) is often considered the “Junior Nobel Prize” and is America’s oldest (since 1942) and most prestigious pre-college science competition. The Intel competitors are considered the next generation of scientists and engineers. Intel STS finalists were selected based on their research ability, scientific originality, creative thinking and ability to apply science to the world around them. New York had more semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search than any other state, 105 among 300 young people from across the United States named semifinalists. Long Island captured 61 semifinalist slots and 11 of those students are from the Town of Hempstead.

In addition to honoring the students themselves – as well as Hewlett and Oceanside High Schools – Murray and Santino recognized the 5 other schools from which the champions hail. John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore had three semifinalists; General Douglas MacArthur High School in Levittown had two semifinalists; and Wellington C. Mepham High School in Bellmore, Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick, and Valley Stream South High School in Valley Stream each had one semifinalist.

The semifinalists each received $1,000 in recognition of their scientific achievements. The schools where the semifinalists attend will also receive $1,000 per semifinalist. Supervisor Murray and Senior Councilman Santino also commended the teachers and parents of the students for their contributions to the success of all 11 scholars.

“The Town of Hempstead is very proud of these elite students,” said Murray. “I would like to congratulate the students, their families and schools for this outstanding achievement. I wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.”

“Each teacher and parent – our children’s mentors – shares in the pride that these Intel semifinalists possess,” noted Santino, before adding “Parents and educators alike should be justifiably proud of these notable achievements; it’s because of them that our students reached their full potential.”

The Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment is offering the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) to help senior citizens prepare their income tax returns. Supervisor Kate Murray and Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino announced the start of the free program, which is being offered to seniors at various local libraries and senior centers.

“The VITA Program has a long and successful history of helping seniors who require assistance filing their tax returns,” said Supervisor Kate Murray. “The Town of Hempstead is proud to continue offering this important program for mature taxpayers.”

All VITA tax preparers are resident volunteers who have been trained by the Department of Senior Enrichment in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Seniors who attend one of the tax preparation sessions MUST bring their 2010 tax return, W2 form, 1099 form (for interest, dividends, capital gains, pensions, IRAS and annuities), 2011 general and school tax receipts, STAR exemption records, social security cards and photo identification. Required documents also include itemized expenses (if applicable), such as medical and prescription bills, mortgage interest, contributions and/or insurance premiums. Residents may be asked to complete additional paperwork at their session.

“This free VITA program is a valuable resource for our town’s senior citizens,” said Senior Councilman Santino. “Our dedicated group of VITA volunteers helps make preparing a tax return much easier for our seniors,” Santino added.

“I would like to thank our group of VITA volunteers for their help in making this program possible,” concluded Murray. “I urge all of our senior residents to take advantage of this free tax program.”

To view a VITA Program schedule, seniors should call the Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment at (516) 485-8100 or visit the VITA webpage.

Senior citizens have been the main target of a recent spate of “distraction” burglaries and robberies in local communities. To prepare and educate our golden aged residents about protecting themselves from dangerous criminal activity, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino, and the Town Department of Public Safety have been offering a series of Senior Citizens’ Crime Prevention Seminars that began on January 6th at the East Meadow Senior Center.

Supervisor Murray, Councilman Santino and their Town Board colleagues announced a schedule of dates and times for Hempstead Town’s Senior Citizens’ Crime Prevention Seminars. All seminars are free of charge, and open to all senior residents living in the Town of Hempstead.

“I urge all senior citizens to take advantage of this free educational safety seminar,” Murray said. “Simple prevention measures that will be discussed during the seminars can protect our residents and keep them out of harm’s way.”

“We are delighted to have the Town offer this informative and free seminars to give valuable safety information to our communities’ seniors,” added Senior Councilman Santino. “The best way to fight crime is to prevent it in the first place; these seminars give you the tools to do just that,” concluded Santino.

“Distraction burglaries” typically involve multiple criminals targeting seniors at their homes. Usually, one person diverts the senior citizen’s attention at the front door with a bogus service or sales pitch, while another breaks into the home and steals money and/or valuable items. These valuable seminars educate seniors about what to watch for, what to avoid and how to protect themselves from these criminals.

A free senior citizen crime prevention brochure is also available for residents. It can be obtained by calling the Hempstead Town Department of Public Safety at (516) 538-1900. The brochure will also be distributed at the seminars.

In the case of inclement weather, check with individual senior centers on event dates by calling the phone numbers listed.
